Getting Your First Tattoo: What to Expect at WA Tattoo
Nervous about your first tattoo? Here's exactly what to expect at WA Tattoo in Las Vegas — from booking and prep to the session itself, pain, cost and aftercare.

Your first tattoo should be exciting, not scary. Most of the nerves come from not knowing what happens — so let’s walk through the whole thing, start to finish, exactly as it goes at WA Tattoo. By the end you’ll know what to do, what to bring, and what it actually feels like.
Plenty of our clients get their very first tattoo with us, and it’s one of our favorite things to do. No judgment, no rush, no gatekeeping.
Before you book
Find your idea — and an artist who fits it. You don’t need it fully designed. A rough concept, a few reference images, and a sense of size and placement is enough. Look through our portfolio and styles to find work that matches what’s in your head — fine-line and small color pieces are especially popular first tattoos.
Book a free consultation. Text us at (702) 908-0002 or DM @watattoolv with your idea, size, placement and any references. We’ll talk it through, suggest anything that’ll help it age well, and set a time. Walk-ins are welcome too.
You must be 18+ with a valid government photo ID. No exceptions, even with a parent — bring your ID.
How to prepare
The day before and morning of, set yourself up to feel good:
- Eat a real meal beforehand — a fed body handles the session far better.
- Hydrate well the day before and the day of.
- Sleep. A rested body tolerates the sensation more easily.
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours prior (it thins your blood and makes tattooing messier).
- Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area — and that you don’t mind possibly getting a little ink on.
Walking in
The shop is relaxed and spotless — more like a friend’s living room than a clinical parlor. On longer sessions we keep snacks and drinks on hand, and there’s a comfortable waiting area. Your artist will:
- Go over the design and finalize size and placement.
- Make a stencil and place it on your skin so you can see exactly where it’ll sit — you approve it before anything starts.
- Set up a fresh, single-use sterile station: new needles, wrapped equipment, gloves.
Take your time on stencil placement. It’s your one chance to move things a centimeter — use it.
Does it hurt?
Honestly? It’s very manageable — most first-timers say it’s less than they feared. It reads more as a hot scratching or buzzing than a sharp pain, and your body settles into it after the first few minutes.
Placement changes everything. Fleshier areas (outer arm, thigh, calf) are the gentlest — great for a first tattoo. Bonier, thinner-skinned spots (ribs, feet, spine, hands) are more intense. Tell your artist if you need a break; a good one wants you comfortable, and we build that in.
How long and how much?
A small first piece can take 20 minutes to an hour. Cost depends on size and detail — small pieces start around the shop minimum, and we’re upfront about the price before we start. See our full breakdown in How much does a tattoo cost in Las Vegas?. We also run happy-hour deals and promotions worth asking about.
Afterward
Your artist wraps the fresh tattoo and walks you through aftercare. The short version: leave the wrap on as instructed, wash gently 2–3 times a day, moisturize thin, don’t pick, and keep it out of the pool and the Las Vegas sun for a couple of weeks. Full details are in our complete aftercare guide — and you can text us any question while it heals.
A few first-timer tips
- Don’t overthink the “meaning.” Plenty of great tattoos exist simply because you liked them. That’s allowed.
- Start where you can see it. Many people love watching their first heal — forearm and calf are easy to admire and easy to care for.
- Bring a friend if it helps you relax (just one — we keep it calm).
- Trust your artist’s advice on size. Slightly bigger almost always ages better than slightly too small.
